that we should go back to the rates that we had when bill clinton was president. i want to reform the tax codes so that it's simple, fair, and asks the wealthiest households to pay taxes on incomes over $250,000. the same rate we had when bill clinton was president. we have to ask you and me and the wealthiest among us to go back to the clinton rates for income above $250,000. >> the clinton tax rates, we need to go back to the clinton tax rates. that's not a generic policy idea. that's really specific. the clinton tax rate for high income earners was 39.6%. that's what president obama was calling for during the campaign. that's still what president obama is calling for now. but now when you ask him if that's the red line, if you ask if he will accept anything else, he doesn't really answer. >> tax rates. are you -- is there no deal at the end of the year if tax rates for the top 2% aren't the clinton tax rates, period. no ifs, ands or buts, any room to negotiate, on that specific aspect of the fiscal cliff. >> with respect to the tax rates, i want to emphasize, i am open to new ideas. i'

cuts to go back to the clinton era rates for the wealthiest americans. maybe that means finding a really creative tax reform that eliminates deductions almost entirely for the wealthy. these are possible see teas. it's hard for me to imagine that either side is really hoping to go over the cliff at this point because they both know what it means for the economy and they are both worried about making that responsibility. at this point it doesn't make any sense to suggest that you're the one who is going to blink because that's going to put you sort of in the underposition of the negotiations. >> let me switch subjects completely because this is sort of the provocative headline. new york city mayor bloomberg called hillary clinton and said you should be my successor as mayor. how do you think that conversation went? i think being a mayor of new york city gives you an opportunity to imagine things that are possible but not in real life. i can imagine how hillary clinton would be enticed to take on that smaller stage after her staging as the nation and the world for the last decade.

's not a coincidence that the president was golfing with bill clinton this sudden. that is as much the president likes golf as much as an effort to say, here i am with the great dealmaker, the reasonable guy that everybody likes, regardless of whether clinton's actually giving him any advice on this although i'm sure he is. >> if you look back to the health care debate obama tried to appear reasonable last time and that didn't work well for him. what he's doing now is all the things he didn't do last time. starting with the unreasonable position, with what he wants rather than what he thinks he'll get which is a better bargaining position. he's going out and trying to get people to pick up the phone, take up, you know, twitter and facebook and tell congress we want to get this done. so he's doing a lot of the things from a negotiating standpoint that he didn't do last it time around, while still, you know, kind of queuing up the blame game as both sides are doing to make sure that other guy takes the fall if it doesn't work. >> and i think to eric's point, this is why you hear the bill crystals of the
